LECTURE (Power Point) + Class Materials Reflection ( What I have learned )

Week 1: Module Briefing

Week 1 asynchronous class materials:

  • Shot size, camera angle, and composition are crucial elements in visual storytelling across film, television, and other visual media.
  • Shot size refers to the visible space within a single frame, conveying different information and emotions.
  • Different shot sizes include close-up (detailing emotions), and wide shot (establishing setting or context).
Reading sources:
Figure a.0: Video Clips ( Shot size) which already mark on the shot size

Summary for this particular film (what i learn, take notes)
  • This clip highlights how crucial composition and frame are to good narrative in cinematography. It emphasizes how important it is to show interactions and dynamics between individuals by isolating them in single shots and adding complexity with several characters. The language stresses the importance of well-timed and well-placed shots to captivate and fully immerse the viewer in the tale, and it urges filmmakers to experiment with different shot compositions to raise visual storytelling beyond the norm.
Figure a.1: Video Clips (Framing) which already mark on the shot size
  • Camera angle is the position of the camera relative to the subject, influencing perspective and information.
  • Examples include high-angle (creating vulnerability) and low-angle (establishing power).
  • Composition involves arranging visual elements within a frame, such as characters, objects, color, and lighting.
  • It creates visual interest, guides the viewer's eye, and conveys meaning or emotion.
  • Together, these elements help filmmakers and storytellers convey ideas and meaning effectively to the audience.

Figure a.2 : Video Clips (Camera Angle) which already mark on the camera angle

Summary for this particular film (what i learn, take notes)
  • Composition Definition: It's about arranging elements in the frame, including subject, space, shapes, colors, and lines, to convey the storytelling message effectively.
  • Key Composition Elements: Techniques like leading lines, rule of thirds, shapes, and color help create focal points and guide the viewer's attention.
  • Framing Techniques: "Frame within a frame," Golden Ratio, and depth in the image (foreground, middle ground, background) aid in creating balance and isolating the main subject.
  • Learning Composition: Though initially challenging, practice leads to an intuitive understanding of composition, enhancing visual storytelling proficiency.

Week 2 :Framing and Storyboard

Before class, we are told to complete quizzes, in order to gain better understanding of the topic.

Figure a.3 : Google form of shot size, camera angle, and composition
  • The three-act story structure is a popular narrative framework used in storytelling, especially in film and literature.
  • Act One: The Setup introduces the protagonist, their world, and the initial situation, ending with an inciting incident that disrupts their world and prompts action.
  • Act Two: The Confrontation is the longest and most complex, where the protagonist faces obstacles and challenges, divided into two parts: progress towards the goal and encountering setbacks.
  • Act Three: The Resolution is where the story reaches its climax and resolution. The protagonist confronts the final challenge, leading to the climax, and then ties up loose ends in the resolution.
  • This structure provides a clear and effective way to create engaging and well-structured narratives that resonate with audiences.

Week 3 :Asynchronous class materials
  • Storyboarding in filmmaking is a visual representation, similar to a comic strip, used to pre-visualize a film, animation, or video game.
  • It consists of a series of illustrations or images displayed in sequence to plan shots, understand narrative flow, and communicate ideas to the production team.
  • Details in storyboards can include camera angles, character movements, dialogue, special effects, and sound notes.
  • This process helps the director, cinematographer, and crew members visualize scenes and prepare for shooting.
  • Storyboarding is crucial in pre-production as it allows experimentation with visual approaches, identification of potential problems, and necessary adjustments, ultimately saving time and resources.

REFLECTION ( Specific for the end Sem)

Over the following weeks, Mr. Martin did an excellent job of guiding us throughout the semester. He always ensured we stayed on track and fully absorbed the knowledge he imparted in class. In this particular module, I learned to use Premiere Pro for video editing and adding effects. Additionally, I gained a fundamental understanding of cinematography, including shot size, camera angle, and composition. This practice enhanced our shooting skills, helping us gather the best materials for our video productions. Throughout the semester, we were taught the principles of storytelling, which improved our ability to create engaging and logically structured video clips, incorporating elements like the inciting incident, midpoint, and climax scenes.
